I think I was born with the travel gene because when I was a child I would spend hours daydreaming about different cultures and people from far away lands, or maybe they were past life memoires.

I have been travelling, independently for more than 30 years, and have had some incredible experiences that have enriched my life. However the one experience I would like to share with you is back in 1985 on a trek through the Himalayas.

I left my 2 young daughters with their father in a chai shop and headed off alone through the forest following a sketchy track, when all of a sudden the heavens opened up and down came the monsoonal rains that completely washed away the track. I found myself in ankle deep mud and no clear vision of where I should be heading.

Before long a bare footed elderly man, supported by a walking stick, wearing a white dhoti, and long white beard and long white hair stood beside me, no words past between us. He held out his hand, I reached up to him and he grabbed my hand and picked me up from the mud. We walked in silence for a while, he then released my hand and pointed ahead - when I turned back to thank him, he was gone. I now know this was a Sadhu, a holy man, who came out of the Himalayas to rescue me - a most remarkable experience.

In 2004 I joined the Intrepid Travel team as a group leader. I lead through 22 countries for over a period of 3 years. From the Middle East and the India subcontinent to all across Europe - I've enjoyed all these regions for different reasons. I'll see you soon in our new Carlton store.
